Society is changing. Crime and protests are on the rise, and there is a growing need to reduce violence against women and girls and the nations shopworkers. According to The British Retail Consortium, violence and abuse against shopworkers rose by 50% in the year to September 2023, and based on Home Office statistics, between 2022 and 2023, 44% of religious hate crimes targeted Muslims. These startling statistics highlight the need for action, and with the imminent introduction of Martyn’s Law and a new Labour Government, we are at a crucial point in the journey of creating safer communities across the UK.
There are already positive steps being taken, with new legislation going through Parliament, and Labours mission to ‘Take Back our Streets’ at the top of the agenda. Society is also starting to organise and galvanise against gender-based violence with initiatives like the White Ribbon Campaign.
