The end of 2021 saw a spike in the uptake and enquiries of self-defence classes for women and girls. Companies that specialised in self-defence and martial arts said enquiries from females went up 50% since the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.
A community in Dumbarton now run self-defence classes in response to two sexual assaults at the local train station, a Krav-Maga club in South East London said their enquiries had been from 75% women in 2021 and one martial arts club in Reading saw an astonishing 80% increase with many women looking to keep themselves ‘safe on the streets’.
Whilst self-defence is brilliant for confidence, physical and mental health should it really be the responsibility of women to keep themselves safe or do we need a society wide educational wake up? Or both?
